Auto Repair Shop Insurance Explained: The Full Coverage Stack

An auto repair shop needs a stack of coverages, not a single policy. The must- haves are garage liability for the work you do, garagekeepers for customers' vehicles in your care, and workers' comp if you have a crew. Around those sit commercial auto for your tow and service trucks, general liability, tools and equipment, and a property or BOP policy for the building. Together they cover your work, your vehicles, your gear, and every car on your lot.

What insurance does an auto repair shop actually need?

Think of it as a stack, built from must-have outward. At the base are the coverages no shop should run without: garage liability for the harm your work can cause others, garagekeepers for the customers' vehicles sitting in your care, and workers' comp the moment you have staff. The next layer protects the things you own and move — commercial auto for tow and service trucks, tools and equipment for the lifts and diagnostics, and general liability for the front-of-house slips and spills. The top layer rounds it out: a property or BOP policy for the building, contents, and signage. Most shops need most of this; we size each layer to your operation rather than selling a one-size box.

What about my tow truck and service vehicles?

Tow trucks and service vehicles need commercial auto — a personal or standard business policy won't cover how they're actually used. Tow operators in particular usually need two add-ons most owners haven't heard named: on-hook coverage, which protects the customer's vehicle while you're towing or hauling it, and cargo coverage for what you're carrying. These fill the gap between your auto liability (harm the truck causes others) and the value of the vehicle riding on the hook. If towing is a real part of your business, this is where shops most often find themselves underinsured. We'll size the on-hook and cargo limits to your towing operation.
